Oum Kalthoum — also written Umm Kulthum, Om Kolthoum — is one of the few artists whose recordings are inseparable from the culture that produced them. Born around 1904 in the Nile Delta, she became the Arab world's most famous voice. When she died in 1975, an estimated four million people attended her funeral in Cairo.
